How to look after fabric upholstery

Has your furniture become an embarrassment, preventing you from inviting people around?

There is no getting away from the fact that every surface in your home will be accumulating dust and other kinds of debris every day. People who vacuum their carpets and flooring and dust fairly regularly wouldn’t dream of not carrying out these routine tasks for weeks, months or even years at a time, yet surprisingly furniture can often be forgotten about.

Fabric upholstery should be regularly vacuumed. If you can manage to vacuum weekly then great, but make sure you do it twice monthly as a minimum. The most effective way to vacuum upholstery is with a hose and attachments such as a crevice tool and upholstery brush. However, if you don’t have these use a soft brush to gently loosen dry soiling, so that it can be more effectively removed.

There are a multitude of contaminants hiding within your upholstery. Dust, mould spores, mites, dander and oils will accumulate over time and create a breeding ground for bacteria giving rise to unpleasant odours. Colours and patterns will also lose their pop and vibrancy making your furniture look dull and lifeless.

Of course, there will also be spillages from time to time – food and beverage spills can leave sticky residues that will attract even more dirt making it more difficult to get rid of stain. Therefore, it’s really important to act ASAP in these circumstances. (see our first aid for mishaps advice!).

Neglected upholstery will soon start to look tired and drab, but if this has happened to your furniture, don’t despair.
